Vanja Beric Counsellor released her Radiant Women podcast episode on 23 September 2022 featuring our very own Jane Tweedy. Jane conversed with Vanja about one of the issues holding back many small business owners (particularly women) – the impact cause, and impact of a lack of self-belief. Self-confidence takes a knock when people don’t believe in themselves, don’t believe they’re good enough, and don’t therefore stick by their pricing or create engaging messaging.

Avoid ripping yourself off due to a lack of self-belief and self-confidence

Jane talked with Vanja about issues impacting business owners which led to the creation of FAQ Business Training, and the “avoid getting ripped off, or ripping yourself off” part of our mission. Getting ripped off may be self-explanatory, but avoiding ripping yourself off usually comes from two things – not knowing what you don’t know, and not believing in yourself.

Don’t feel others are doing so much better because of their #instalife

The cause of a lack of self-belief and self-confidence often comes about because we have a false belief we need to be a guru before we have anything worthy to say. We also look into other people’s socials, see their carefully constructed #instalife and believe the highlights reel. This is rarely the case. Even struggles are carefully curated.

Some people use their differences as a content pillar, and helps them to stand out in a good way. An example of this is Cherie Clonan of The Digital Picnic and her talk about being neurodivergent.

We talked about being a guru actually being counterproductive in some cases, as they are too far removed from the person they are serving. Being a few steps ahead is not a bad thing!

Beware of underpricing and destroying your industry

Underpricing can destroy industries where you are good at what you do and don’t charge accordingly. Sure a few clients to build your portfolio may be justifiable, but not a lot of them!

Many newer business owners treat every rejection as a ‘we are too expensive’ even when the customer tells them the actual reason!

Emotional benefit messaging – why and how not what you do

Then at 26’00” Jane gives a great example of changing the messaging for marketing a cleaning business. If you don’t understand selling emotional benefits and tapping into the customer’s real why, listen to this. I think both of us wanted to rush out and hire a cleaner!
